We welcome you to St. John's Episcopal in Decatur Illinois. The bells are ringing. Visiting a church for the first time can be a daunting experience. At St John's, we’ve tried to put ourselves in your shoes to anticipate your questions and to ensure that you are warmly welcomed and comfortable here.
Each week our services include options for Eucharist (service that is said without music), Choral Eucharist (service that includes the organ and choir), and Evening Prayer (a more brief service without music). For weekly service times and locations, please visit our EVENTS page with the calendar.
Our Sunday worship services are at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
The 8:00 AM service is a said mass (no music) and fairly quiet with more traditional prayers. This service usually lasts around 35 minutes and uses the Rite I liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer.
The 10:00 AM service, on the other hand, uses Rite II (which is a bit more modern) and will last approximately an hour and a half with choral mass accompanied by the organ and choir. This service is live-streamed on our Facebook page.
We celebrate the Holy Eucharist every Sunday at every service and ALL baptized Christians are welcome to participate.
At St. John’s we move to the front of nave at the appointed time and receive the host and/or wine.
We have free parking in our parking lot attached to the church, and also along the street. Handicap parking is available.
There’s no dress code. Some people dress up in their Sunday best and others show up in jeans and a sweater, whatever feels comfortable and appropriate for you is fine.
All are welcome to worship in their own manner.
-- Covid Changes for the Nursery and Sunday School –
As of May 2021, we are just returning to a normal schedule, as many others are. We have not had many children this past year, but a Nursery Teacher is always available. Please stop in the church proper and talk to one of the ushers if you need care.
Childcare is available on Sunday mornings in the nursery just off the Parish Hall on the main floor. Nursery care begins at 10:00 a.m. and lasts through the 10:00 service until communion when children are brought back to their parents. Snacks are also provided.
Sunday School for adults and children will return in Fall 2021
Sunday school for adults is upstairs in the parish hall classroom and downstairs for children. Both are at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
